Gulmarg, Sep 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted the critical need for collaboration among tourism stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir during a meeting on September 18, 2023, at the newly opened Gulmarg Convention Centre.
During this closed-door gathering, Abdullah expressed his disappointment with tourism industry leaders, stating they have not supported his government’s promotional initiatives. He noted the silence of the stakeholders in the face of ongoing political attacks against his tourism policies.
Importance of Stakeholder Support for Tourism
Abdullah, who also oversees the tourism portfolio, emphasized that his administration has initiated several projects to boost tourism. These include a recently organized cycling festival in Pahalgam and a promotional campaign launched after the tragic April 22 terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 tourists.
Despite these efforts, Abdullah lamented that he felt isolated, as industry players did not come to his defense during critical moments of scrutiny from the opposition. He passionately urged the stakeholders to unite for the sector’s revival.
Possible Review of Hotel Lease Agreements
The Chief Minister warned that lease agreements for hotels located in key tourism spots like Jammu, Katra, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Srinagar, and Gulmarg would soon be under review. His statements reflect a serious intent to gauge the commitment of the tourism sector towards the region’s economy.
Abdullah criticized what he referred to as the “selective leakage” of information related to his initiatives, implying that only certain official orders were making their way to the media and the opposition. This issue underscores the need for transparent communication among all stakeholders involved.
Addressing Criticism Around Paris Tourism Visit
Further, sources indicate that the Chief Minister was notably irritated by the backlash linked to a proposed tourism promotion visit to Paris. Abdullah clarified that neither he nor his advisor, Nasir Aslam Wani, would be part of this visit; instead, it would be attended by state officials and representatives from travel associations.
This clarification aims to mitigate any misunderstandings that could arise from the event’s portrayal in the media. Abdullah’s commitment to representing the interests of the state through professional channels is clear.
Economic Dependence on Tourism
Abdullah concluded his statements by remarking on the historical reliance of the region’s economy on tourism and related sectors. He firmly asserted that without cooperation between public and private stakeholders, the thriving vitality of the industry could not be reinstated.
The Chief Minister’s rallying cry is not just about tourism but about the broader economic resilience of Jammu and Kashmir, which faces challenges that require collective action.
According to recent studies, tourism contributes significantly to the local economy, with over 10% of the regional GDP coming from this sector alone. The necessity for stakeholders to integrate their efforts has never been more urgent.
In this impactful meeting and beyond, the call for unification in the tourism sector echoes throughout the valleys of Jammu and Kashmir, with the hope that a consolidated effort can restore the vibrance of the tourist experience in the region.
