Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Gulmarg Convention Centre on March 3, 2023, aiming to establish Gulmarg as Asia’s prime location for international events and conventions. The ceremony took place in the picturesque surroundings of Jammu and Kashmir, where Abdullah expressed his vision for the Centre to play a crucial role in the region’s tourism development.
About the Gulmarg Convention Centre
Constructed at a cost of Rs 21 crore by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), the Gulmarg Convention Centre is designed to promote both tourism and cultural exchange. It will serve as a venue for various international conferences and business events, aiming to attract visitors from across the globe.
Alongside Abdullah, notable figures present included Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Gulmarg Pirzada Farooq A Shah, and Director Tourism Kashmir Raja Farooq Yaqoob. Their participation signifies the government’s commitment to enhancing Gulmarg’s appeal as a convention hotspot.
Strengthening Tourism Infrastructure
The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for a Ski Hire Shop, which will be developed by the J&K Cable Car Corporation. This addition aims to further enhance Gulmarg’s renowned tourism infrastructure.
During his address, Omar Abdullah highlighted that while constructing physical infrastructure is essential, maintaining and utilizing it effectively is even more critical. “The real responsibility begins with their use and maintenance,” he stated, underscoring the importance of ensuring the Centre is well-equipped and operational.
Positioning Gulmarg as a MICE Hub
“We aim to market the Gulmarg Convention Centre as a top-tier destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE), as well as weddings and high-profile events,” Abdullah shared. This initiative is crucial for positioning Gulmarg as a premier site for global networking.
Additionally, the Chief Minister expressed his desire for the Centre to be linked with the marketing network of SKICC (Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre), promoting Gulmarg as part of a comprehensive tourism package.
Enhancing Visitor Experience
Omar Abdullah emphasized the need to create engaging evening activities for tourists in Gulmarg. “While skiing and sightseeing are popular daytime activities, tourists are often left with little to do in the evenings,” he noted. The introduction of facilities such as a coffee shop, restaurant, and a digital cinema projection system is aimed at enhancing the visitor experience.
This holistic approach not only aims to improve tourist satisfaction but also contribute to local revenue generation, keeping the Convention Centre active throughout the day.
Collaboration and Future Prospects
To maximize utilization, Abdullah encouraged various government departments to hold meetings, training programs, and official events at the new Centre. He said, “Departments such as education and health can benefit from this refreshing change of location.”
The Chief Minister was optimistic about the future, stating that with proper management and marketing, the Gulmarg Convention Centre could emerge as a vibrant hub for international conferences and recreational activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
“I envision a day when people will recognize Gulmarg as the Indian and Asian Davos, enhancing both its tourism profile and cultural landscape,” he concluded.
In summary, with the inauguration of the Gulmarg Convention Centre, Jammu and Kashmir’s CM Omar Abdullah has taken a significant step towards enhancing the region’s tourism profile and positioning it as a key player in the international events sector. The vision to make Gulmarg a hub for MICE tourism promises to foster economic growth and cultural exchange.
