Jammu Police Constable Arrested in Gujjar Youth Killing Case

A Jammu and Kashmir Police constable has been formally arrested in connection with the killing of a 21-year-old Gujjar youth, Mohammad Parvez, during a firing incident on July 24. This significant development follows strong community protests and demands for justice from political leaders.

The arrest on Wednesday of constable Pawan Singh marks a pivotal moment in the case that has stirred widespread unrest in the Gujjar community. The police claimed that Parvez was involved in illegal drug trafficking, a narrative that his family and community firmly contest, labeling the shooting a ‘fake encounter.’

After public outcry and protests rejecting the police’s account of the incident, the Jammu and Kashmir Police took action by forming a special investigation team (SIT). A magistrate probe was also ordered to uncover the truth behind the events leading to Parvez’s violent death.

Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former chief minister, welcomed the arrest as a crucial step toward justice. She emphasized that it sends a clear message that accountability within law enforcement is imperative. “It is a reminder that no one, not even those in uniform, is above the law,” Mufti stated.

Following the incident, Pawan Singh, alongside head constable Baljinder Singh, faced immediate suspension pending investigations. Authorities book the constable under Section 105 of the BNS, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Mufti highlighted the need for thorough scrutiny and expressed her hope that the judicial process would yield justice for Parvez, whose death she described as an irreplaceable loss. “While his death is tragic, this arrest provides a glimmer of hope that justice will prevail,” she remarked.

The shooting incident, which took place near Sure Chak village, ignited protests from the Gujjar community, who asserted that Parvez died unjustly. Chief Ministers and various political leaders joined the calls for an independent investigation, emphasizing the need for transparency and justice in this sensitive case.

SSP Jammu, Joginder Singh, and IGP Jammu have received commendations for their efforts in ensuring a fair investigation. Their actions help in restoring the community’s faith in law enforcement and suggest a dedication to ensuring justice in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Gujjar community has long maintained that they face challenges with law enforcement, and incidents like Parvez’s killing highlight a critical need for systemic reform. As the inquiry progresses, the community and various stakeholders hope for a judicial system that delivers fairness and accountability.

The focus now shifts to the upcoming judicial proceedings as the community grapples with loss and seeks to ensure a thorough examination of the facts surrounding Parvez’s death. As justice unfolds, both the local authorities and the Gujjar community look toward creating an environment of trust and safety amidst a history of tension.
