Jaishankar Advocates for Stronger Global South Unity and UN Reform

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for stronger solidarity among Global South nations, advocating for multilateralism and a collective reform of global institutions. His comments came during a High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South countries held on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During this critical meeting, Jaishankar articulated that in light of the multitude of global challenges, it is imperative for the Global South to turn to multilateral solutions. On social media platform X, he highlighted the need for a renewed commitment to collaboration among developing nations.

The minister presented a structured approach aimed at enhancing the influence and voice of the Global South. He proposed five key initiatives that focus on building unity among developing countries and fostering a collaborative spirit.

Jaishankar emphasized maximizing existing forums to facilitate consultations among Global South nations. This strategy aims to strengthen mutual solidarity and collaboration on pressing issues.

In his address, he stressed the necessity for a thorough reform of the United Nations alongside improvements in the broader multilateral framework. He argued that the Global South should showcase its unique strengths and achievements, such as capabilities in vaccines, digital technology, education, and agro-practices.

Moreover, Jaishankar underlined the importance of proactively addressing equitable solutions to global challenges, particularly with respect to climate action. He urged developing nations to propose initiatives that truly reflect their interests instead of merely adopting perspectives prevalent in the Global North.

Discussions around emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, also featured prominently in his address. He noted that it is crucial for developing countries to engage with these technologies to avoid being marginalized in the rapidly evolving global landscape.

Jaishankar’s remarks resonate with India’s longstanding commitment to advocating for the Global South in international discussions, reflecting a deep-seated resolve to ensure that developing nations are not just passive recipients of global policies but active shapers of the international agenda.

As nations navigate a complex global environment, calls for increased solidarity and reform in multinational frameworks resonate strongly among the Global South. Jaishankar’s initiatives could lead to stronger collaboration among developing countries, ultimately enhancing their role on the world stage.
