Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) President Farooq Abdullah cautioned the BJP-led Central government to heed the lessons from the recent violence in Leh, Ladakh. During a press conference on Thursday, he highlighted that the unrest stemmed from long-standing demands for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule.
The violence erupted following frustrations from the local populace over unfulfilled promises. Abdullah remarked, “The situation reflects local grievances rather than external influences.” He specifically referenced peaceful protests led by noted activist Sonam Wangchuk, including a hunger strike and a barefoot march from Leh to Delhi, as critical expressions of local discontent.
Abdullah’s comments come after incidents of unrest resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals and left over 80 others injured, including police personnel. Protesters took to the streets, destroying BJP offices and setting police vehicles ablaze. In response, law enforcement resorted to tear gas and live ammunition to manage the situation.
He emphasized that the unrest in Leh indicates a deeper issue concerning local identity and governance. The JKNC chief articulated that the Central government must engage in sincere dialogues with the people of Ladakh to address their aspirations and fend off potential escalations in violence.
Highlighting the importance of regional stability, Abdullah underscored the unique vulnerabilities of border areas like Ladakh, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions with China. He warned, “Dialogue is essential; the government cannot afford to ignore the aspirations of the Ladakhi people.”
Abdullah’s remarks resonated with many in the region who feel marginalized by promises that have yet to be fulfilled. The demand for statehood has grown louder among locals who seek greater autonomy and recognition within the framework of Indian governance.
