Ladakh Unrest: Curfew Continues in Leh Amid Protests

Authorities have enforced a strict curfew in Leh for the third consecutive day as tensions rise over protests demanding statehood for Ladakh. A team from the Union Home Ministry arrived in Leh on Thursday for discussions about the ongoing unrest.

Officials confirmed that the curfew, first imposed on Wednesday evening, responded to widespread protests that resulted in four fatalities and left over 90 individuals injured. The protests, organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), aimed to emphasize the demand for statehood and the incorporation of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Despite the curfew, officials reported that the situation in Ladakh remains largely calm. Authorities have hinted at potential relaxations of curfew measures, hoping to permit essential activities later in the day. However, over 50 protest-related detentions have occurred since the curfew’s imposition.

Police and paramilitary units actively patrol the streets to uphold law and order, ensuring attempts to disrupt peace meet with a firm response. Romil Singh, the District Magistrate of Leh, has mandated the closure of all government and private educational institutions for two days starting Friday.

In light of the protests, a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Home Affairs convened meetings to analyze the current security environment in Leh. According to the latest updates, no significant incidents have been reported since the curfew began, contributing to a cautious optimism among residents.

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, has publicly addressed ongoing concerns, stating, “The videos being circulated are deliberate attempts to disturb peace in Ladakh. We cannot allow the future of our youth to be compromised. Any such incidents will be dealt with under a zero-tolerance policy.” His statement reflects the administration’s commitment to maintaining order during this turbulent period.

As the situation evolves, both residents and officials remain vigilant, observing how the federal response and public sentiment will shape the immediate future of Ladakh. The community awaits further announcements regarding the potential easing of restrictions, while staying alert amidst a backdrop of heightened security.
