MiG-21: A Symbol of National Pride, Says Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday highlighted the iconic MiG-21 fighter jets as more than just aircraft, describing them as symbols of national pride and reflecting the deep ties between India and Russia. Singh spoke at the decommissioning ceremony held at the Chandigarh Air Force Station, marking the end of an era for these vital machines.

The MiG-21, which has been part of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) combat fleet since the 1960s, officially concluded its operational journey after over 62 years. Singh expressed his admiration by stating that the jet had shouldered the weight of national security and played a crucial role in shaping India’s defense strategy.

“We gather here to commemorate the final operational sortie of the MiG-21. I feel immense pride and gratitude being amongst you,” Singh said. He emphasized the aircraft’s significant contributions during pivotal conflicts, including the 1971 India-Pakistan war, the Kargil conflict in 1999, and the Balakot airstrikes in 2019.

According to Singh, the MiG-21 has witnessed countless acts of bravery, stating, “Its contributions have not been limited to a single incident or conflict.” He recalled its pivotal moment during the 1971 war, where it was instrumental in the attack on the Dhaka Governor House, influencing the war’s outcome.

During the ceremony, Singh praised the MiG-21 for its unmatched legacy in military aviation. “No other fighter jet in history has been produced in such numbers worldwide. Over 11,500 MiG-21 aircraft were manufactured globally, with around 850 still serving in the IAF,” he noted. This highlights the aircraft’s robust reputation and versatility.

Singh reflected on the emotional connection many have with the MiG-21, regarding it as a symbol of both national pride and a testament to its legacy. “For us, it is not merely an aircraft but a member of the family, deeply woven into the fabric of our national identity,” he asserted.

Highlighting traditional values, Singh likened the decommissioning event to ceremonies honoring retiring soldiers. “We are not just bidding farewell to a piece of machinery; we are embracing a cultural tradition that respects everything that has contributed to our national security,” he stated passionately.

The Defence Minister clarified misconceptions about the MiG-21’s retirement age, asserting, “While some speculate that we were flying 60-year-old aircraft, it is important to note that the MiG-21s we operated until now were only about 40 years old. Such longevity is typical for fighter jets of this category globally.”

Rajnath Singh concluded the ceremony by vowing that even as the IAF transitions to new aircraft, the MiG-21’s legacy will remain an indelible part of India’s military history. He reaffirmed the importance of updating older aircraft while ensuring that the spirit of the MiG-21 will endure in the hearts of soldiers and citizens alike.
