Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah showcased their lethal bowling skills, dismantling the West Indies batting lineup for just 162 runs on the opening day of the first Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. As India dominated the day’s play, they responded with a solid batting effort, reaching 121/2 by stumps.
Siraj led the charge for India, delivering a fiery spell that earned him figures of 4 for 40. He struck early, dismissing three batsmen in the first session and returning after lunch to take one more wicket. Bumrah added to the Windies’ woes with his impeccable yorkers and relentless accuracy, finishing with 3 for 32. Kuldeep Yadav contributed with two wickets for 25 runs, while Washington Sundar chipped in with one wicket for just nine runs.
Despite the Indian bowlers’ onslaught, The West Indies faced difficulties in crafting partnerships, with only a few batsmen reaching double figures. Justin Greaves top-scored with 32 runs, while Shai Hope and captain Roston Chase managed 26 and 24 runs, respectively, providing only brief resistance.
In contrast, India’s response was anchored by KL Rahul, who scored a composed 53 not out off 114 balls. Rahul’s cautious approach steadied India after a minor collapse where opener Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed a brisk 36 before edging a delivery from Jayden Seales. Debutant B Sai Sudharsan had a disappointing outing, scoring only seven runs before falling to Chase.
Rahul’s innings demonstrated patience and resilience, especially during a brief rain interruption that halted play. His ability to manage pressure allowed India to transition smoothly into the later stages of the day. Skipper Shubman Gill supported him, remaining unbeaten on 18, as India ended the day just 41 runs shy of West Indies’ total, firmly in control of the match.
India’s bowlers, particularly Siraj and Bumrah, displayed aggression and efficiency, setting the stage for a potential first Test victory. With rain playing a role in the play, India will look to build on their advantage on the second day. They aim to secure a dominant position in this two-Test series, showcasing their depth and talent against a struggling West Indies side.
