The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) intensifies as nine candidates, including four from the ruling National Conference (NC) and three from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have filed their nominations for four Rajya Sabha seats. This pivotal moment took place today when the candidates presented their papers to the Returning Officer, Manoj Pandita, Secretary of the Assembly.
In the first notification for elections to one seat, Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan of NC, Dr. Ali Muhammad Mir of BJP, and independent candidate Prabhakar Dada made their nominations. The NC-led alliance, which commands a supportive majority with 53 MLAs, positions Ramzan favorably for securing this seat, even without the support of Congress. Conversely, the BJP relies on its coalition of 28 MLAs.
Under the second notification, Sajad Kichloo of NC and Rakesh Mahajan from the BJP enter the arena for an additional single seat. With the voting dynamics mirroring the initial round, Kichloo appears likely to emerge victorious.
For the third notification pertaining to two seats, NC’s Gurwinder Singh Oberoi (known as Shammi Oberoi), Imran Dar, BJP’s Sat Pal Sharma, and independent candidate Kante Sayanna have filed their documents. Political analysts predict that the candidates receiving the highest votes will win these seats. Specifically, indications suggest that Gurwinder Singh Oberoi will obtain 29 votes from the NC alliance, while Imran Dar is projected to receive 24 votes. The BJP legislators are expected to cast all 28 votes for Sat Sharma.
Post-nomination, BJP’s Rakesh Mahajan expressed gratitude towards the party’s leadership and radiated optimism about the election outcome. “I am thankful to the national leadership for this honour. I am sure we will win all three seats. The BJP gives equal opportunity to every worker, and all get their due right,” he stated.
Party president Sat Sharma, who also joins the contest, took a jibe at the ruling NC, underscoring the BJP’s resolve. “We will fight with all our strength and script history. We aim to win more than one seat this time,” Sharma asserted.
Dr. Ali Muhammad Mir, another BJP candidate, shared his gratitude for the trust bestowed upon him. “Entire Kashmir is happy. I thank the central leadership for considering me competent for this responsibility,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, the NC chief spokesperson, Tanvir Sadiq, affirmed the successful completion of the nomination process. “We are confident of winning all four seats. However, it is unfortunate that Congress did not agree to what was offered. I urge all secular forces to support our candidates,” he remarked.
Senior NC leader Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan, also in the race, emphasized the importance of raising developmental and political concerns in Parliament. “We will come up to people’s expectations. There are a number of issues — developmental and political — that must be addressed, and we will talk about them,” he declared.
The elections for the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled for later this month, fostering a competitive political environment critical for both the NC and BJP.
