No Food Grain Shortages in Keran and Jamgund Areas: Minister

Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, informed the Legislative Assembly today that there are no shortages of food grains in the far-flung areas of Keran and Jamgund in Kupwara district. Sharma’s remarks came during a response to a Calling Attention Motion raised by MLA Mir Saifullah, who had expressed concerns about the availability of essential food supplies in these regions.

Mir Saifullah highlighted the challenges faced by residents of Keran and Jamgund, explaining that these areas remain cut off for nearly six months every winter due to heavy snowfall. This often leads to acute shortages of essential commodities, impacting the livelihoods of the local population.

In his detailed response, Minister Sharma assured the Assembly that the government implements comprehensive measures to ensure food security in these remote regions. He emphasized the practice of advanced stocking and supply of food grains under various schemes for a target period of eight months, extending from November to June each year. This system ensures timely distribution of food grains well ahead of potential winter disruptions.

Addressing the Assembly, Sharma presented specific data regarding food grain supply to Jamgund, stating that for the period from November 2025 to June 2026, the area required 536.14 quintals of food grains. He announced that 100% of this necessary quantity has already been delivered, satisfying the needs of the local population.

Similarly, for Keran, the required quantity amounts to 2774.43 quintals. As of now, 800 quintals have already reached the area, and an additional 346.80 quintals have been stored in advance at designated locations to ensure residents have access to food supplies as winter approaches.

“The remaining quantity will be delivered and stored by or before October 31, 2025.” Minister Sharma emphasized the government’s dedication to guaranteeing an uninterrupted food supply to all remote and border regions of Jammu and Kashmir. These efforts signify the government’s commitment to safeguarding the food security of residents in challenging geographical locations.

This announcement from the Minister alleviates concerns surrounding the potential for food scarcity in the region, providing reassurance to residents of Keran and Jamgund that they will remain supported throughout the harsh winter months.
