In a significant milestone for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth. This baby stands as one of the heaviest delivered at the institution in its history.
The baby was born on 25th October 2025, at 1:20 PM to a diabetic mother. Shortly after birth, the newborn developed severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. Recognizing the critical condition, the medical team promptly admitted the infant to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management and continuous monitoring.
Due to the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and signs of respiratory compromise, the NICU team initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support. Healthcare professionals closely observed the infant’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Over the next several days, the infant showed remarkable progress, allowing for a gradual reduction in respiratory support.
In the final 72 hours leading up to discharge, the baby maintained stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and appropriate temperature regulation. There were no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation during this period. After demonstrating sustained clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in healthy condition, with routine follow-up recommended.
This successful management underscores the NICU’s advanced capabilities and teamwork. The case fell under the guidance of HOD Pediatrics, Dr. Najmus Saqib, with overall supervision from faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. Their dedication extended to the committed team of senior and junior residents.
Special acknowledgment goes to the nursing and paramedical staff of GMC Doda. Their vigilant monitoring, compassionate care, and unwavering commitment played a crucial role in the baby’s recovery.
This achievement highlights the growing neonatal expertise at GMC Doda’s Pediatrics Department. It reflects the institution’s commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region.
