Azam Khan and Son Abdullah Sentenced to Jail in Forgery Case

Senior Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam were convicted and sentenced to prison by a special MP/MLA court in Rampur on Monday. The court imposed prison terms of up to seven years in a notable 2019 forgery case.

The special magistrate, Shobhit Bansal, rendered the verdict after scrutinizing documentary evidence and witness statements presented by the prosecution. Prosecution Officer Rakesh Kumar Maurya confirmed the conviction and informed reporters of the potential for an appeal if they find the sentence insufficient.

Maurya stated, “Yes, absolutely,” when questioned about whether the convicted duo would be taken into custody immediately following the verdict.

The case originated in 2019 at the Civil Lines police station in Rampur. BJP leader Akash Saxena filed a complaint that led to the accusations against both Khan and his son. The charges included multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code: 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for cheating), 471 (using forged documents), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy).

According to the prosecution, Abdullah Azam acquired a PAN card from the Income Tax Department, listing his date of birth as January 1, 1993. This date coincided with his educational records and details from his State Bank of India account.

Furthermore, the court established that Abdullah had procured the forged PAN card “in conspiracy with his father,” thereby complicating the legal standing of both individuals. The essence of the case revolves around acquiring and utilizing forged identification for official purposes.

This conviction adds to the legal woes experienced by Azam Khan, who has previously faced various legal challenges. Khan’s influence within the Samajwadi Party remains significant, but this ruling could substantially impact his political future.

Legal experts anticipate that the direction of this case could reshape the narrative surrounding political practices in Uttar Pradesh, especially given Khan’s stature. The potential for an appeal by the prosecution underlines the ongoing legal drama surrounding this high-profile case.

As developments unfold, public and political reactions toward the conviction are likely to emerge, accentuating the intertwined fate of law and politics in the state.
