The Congress party sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday regarding the soaring unemployment rate in India, lamenting that he prioritizes electioneering over substantive solutions. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that the past eleven years of Modi’s governance have led to serious discontent among various segments of society.
Ramesh stated, “Rising unemployment has become a matter of grave concern.” In a post on X, he articulated the widespread frustration felt by students, youth, farmers, labourers, workers, shopkeepers, employees, and businessmen; a dissatisfaction that he attributed directly to the government’s policies.
He expressed concern over the increasing inflation, the depreciating value of the rupee, and the widening wealth gap, stating, “Life has become challenging for both poor and middle-class families.”
Highlighting the latest figures from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), Ramesh emphasized that India’s unemployment rate surged to 7.5% in October 2025, marking the highest rate observed in the last six months. He revealed, “Millions of people have lost their jobs across various sectors, including construction and IT banking.” Specifically, over 90 lakh individuals have lost employment in the construction industry alone, with a decrease of 25 lakh salaried jobs.
According to Ramesh, these alarming statistics reflect a persistent trend. He lamented that despite the annual occurrence of such figures over the last decade, the Modi administration remains nonchalant.
In a direct appeal to the Prime Minister, Ramesh remarked, “It seems Modi ji has no concern for the youth of this country. Always in election mode, he is busy crafting new speeches and narratives to distract the public instead of solving the unemployment crisis.”
Congress has continuously scrutinized the government’s economic strategies, alleging that inflation, decreasing private investment, and stagnant wages harm ordinary citizens significantly. The party insists that the government should prioritize genuine economic reforms and job creation, instead of focusing solely on propaganda and political rhetoric. As the nation grapples with these ongoing issues, the call for decisive action intensifies.
