The Congress party on Friday demanded that the government respond swiftly to the legitimate aspirations of the people of Ladakh amidst ongoing unrest in the region. Following violent protests calling for statehood that left four dead and dozens injured, Congress urged immediate action to address the grievances of Ladakh’s residents.
General Secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, expressed disappointment over the unmet expectations since the Union Territory of Ladakh’s creation six years ago. Ramesh highlighted that instead of progress, residents have faced significant disenchantment.
Ramesh criticized the government’s inaction, stating that the people of Ladakh feel a severe threat to their land and employment rights. In a post on social media platform X, he pointed out the increasing control of the local administration by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) and bureaucracy, sidelining elected representatives.
The Congress leader also expressed concerns regarding legislative protection for Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Despite numerous discussions, he noted that meaningful progress remains elusive.
Adding to the region’s distress, Ramesh mentioned the geopolitical instability caused by China’s actions along the Line of Actual Control. He referred to Prime Minister Modi’s prior statements as “a clean chit to China,” attributing to this a growing sense of uncertainty among Ladakhis.
“Ladakh is crucial to India’s cultural, economic, ecological, and strategic landscape,” Ramesh emphasized. “The people of Ladakh have consistently demonstrated their patriotism. Now, their anguish must awaken the conscience of the Government of India and lead to immediate actions fulfilling their demands,” he reiterated emphatically.
In the wake of these developments, authorities imposed a strict curfew in Leh on Thursday to restore order. The unrest erupted during demonstrations organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), advocating for statehood and an extension of the Sixth Schedule in Ladakh.
Reports indicate that over 90 individuals sustained injuries during Wednesday’s turmoil, prompting law enforcement to detain at least 50 participants linked to the violent upheaval. This unrest reflects deeper frustrations among the populace regarding their governance and autonomy.
The situation remains tense but calm in Leh as the curfew continues. Political leaders and local activists stress the need for immediate dialogue between the government and Ladakhi representatives. Only genuine conversations and action can pave the way for healing and restoration in the region.
