DRDO Launches Agni-Prime Missile from Rail-Based System

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), in conjunction with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully launched the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher on October 16, 2023, demonstrating India’s advanced strategic capabilities. This launch represents a significant achievement, placing India among a select group of nations possessing sophisticated canisterised launch systems.

The Agni-Prime missile is engineered to strike targets up to 2,000 kilometers away. It boasts multiple advanced features designed to enhance operational efficiency. The maiden launch took place from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher that operates seamlessly on the rail network without preconditions. This system ensures cross-country mobility and enables rapid launch capabilities while minimizing visibility.

During the test, multiple ground stations meticulously tracked the missile’s trajectory, affirming the launch as a textbook operation that met all mission objectives. This successful test opens doors for the integration of forward-looking rail-based systems into military service, enhancing India’s defense posture.

Senior scientists from DRDO and officers from the Strategic Forces Command observed the launch, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this project. The rail-mobile Agni-P has already seen successful induction into service following several flight trials.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his congratulations to DRDO, SFC, and the armed forces on the successful Agni-Prime missile test, noting, “This flight test has cemented India’s position among nations that have developed canisterised launch systems capable of launching from a rail network while on the move.”

He emphasized the importance of this test, stating, “The next-generation missile’s range of 2,000 km, coupled with various advanced features, enhances our strategic capabilities significantly.” Singh further remarked on social media, commending the agility and effectiveness of the rail-based mobile launcher.

The Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development, who also chairs DRDO, praised all teams involved in the project for their exceptional accomplishment, underscoring the importance of continued innovation in defense technologies.

This successful launch significantly boosts India’s defense capabilities, demonstrating not only technological advancements but also strategic foresight in military operations. The Agni-Prime missile stands as a testament to India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense, contributing to national security and strategy.
