National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah praised the Jammu and Kashmir government’s efforts to revive tourism in the region following the tragic Pahalgam attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. On World Tourism Day, celebrated on September 27, Abdullah expressed his happiness at the reopening of various tourist destinations.
During a recent statement, Abdullah extended heartfelt greetings to both the people of Jammu and Kashmir and global admirers of the region’s unparalleled natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. He emphasized that tourism in Jammu and Kashmir extends beyond an economic activity; it constitutes a vital source of livelihood for thousands and supports the social fabric of the community.
Abdullah specifically acknowledged the role of the Omar Abdullah-led government in revitalizing the tourism sector during recent challenges. He remarked, “The administration responded swiftly and effectively to restore tourist confidence. This reaffirmed J&K’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.” He noted that such efforts lay a robust groundwork for sustainable and long-term tourism growth in the region.
In his address, the NC President welcomed the decision by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to reopen tourist destinations affected by the Pahalgam tragedy. He underscored the importance of inclusive tourism development, advocating for equal attention to regions such as Chenab and Pir Panjal.
“Our focus must also include sustainable tourism models that protect the environment and preserve local culture,” Abdullah stated, echoing the broader sentiments for ecological integrity amidst tourism efforts. He urged stakeholders to remember that tourism can enhance regional development while maintaining ecological balance.
As he spoke on World Tourism Day, Abdullah highlighted the collective duty to foster a peaceful, progressive, and welcoming Jammu and Kashmir. “Let this day remind us of our shared effort to create an environment where every visitor feels valued, and every citizen reaps the benefits of tourism-led growth,” he concluded.
Abdullah’s remarks arrive at a critical juncture for Jammu and Kashmir, where tourism plays a pivotal role in the state’s economy. The success of recent initiatives could restore confidence not only among local stakeholders but also among international tourists keen on exploring this picturesque region.
