Four Dead, 30 Injured in Leh Clashes During Protest Shutdown

Four people died and at least 30 others sustained injuries in violent clashes between security personnel and protesters during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) in Leh town, Ladakh, on Wednesday. The unrest highlights the ongoing demand for statehood for Ladakh and the extension of the Sixth Schedule provisions.

Officials reported that tensions escalated as protesters clashed with law enforcement agencies, leading police to resort to firing to control the situation. The unrest erupted after protesters engaged in violent acts, including attacking a BJP office and damaging several vehicles.

Witnesses claim the violence resulted in four fatalities attributed to police firing, a statement echoed by local groups advocating for Ladakh’s autonomy. This violent episode marks a significant escalation in a long-standing agitation for greater political rights in the region.

The protest stemmed from a hunger strike led by members of the LAB’s youth wing. Following the health crisis of two protestors who had been on a hunger strike since September 10, the youth wing mobilized the community for a large-scale demonstration in support of their demands.

As the region grapples with calls for statehood, many believe that the Sixth Schedule’s extension would result in greater political autonomy and protection of the unique culture and identity of Ladakh. Residents express frustration over perceived governmental inaction regarding their longstanding demands.

Local authorities have since implemented security measures to prevent further violence and protect public safety. The situation on the ground remains tense as officials work to address the unrest and engage in dialogue with various stakeholders.

Political leaders across the region urge calm and call for discussions to resolve this conflict amicably. As this tragic incident unfolds, it underscores the urgent need for addressing the grievances of the Ladakhi populace, ensuring their aspirations for statehood and autonomy are duly recognized.
