Geetanjali Angmo, wife of prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, visited her husband at Jodhpur Central Jail on October 10, following his detention on September 24 amid politically charged violence in Leh.
During the visit, Angmo was accompanied by lawyer Ritam Khare. She confirmed the legal team has procured a copy of Wangchuk’s detention order, which they plan to challenge in court.
The detention order outlines the allegations against Wangchuk and cites the invocation of the National Security Act (NSA). This legislation is often applied in cases where authorities believe a person poses a threat to national security.
Wangchuk, known for advocating environmental sustainability within Ladakh, has urged for an independent judicial inquiry into the tragic outcomes of protests last month, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals.
After a visit to the jail on Saturday by his brother, Tsetan Dorje, accompanied by lawyer Mustafa Haji, Haji posted on X, revealing Wangchuk’s stance on remaining in jail until the inquiry he demands is conducted.
“Wangchuk has expressed his willingness to remain in jail until such an inquiry is conducted,” Haji remarked, emphasizing the activist’s commitment to justice.
Amid ongoing legal battles, Angmo has lodged a petition in the Supreme Court for her husband’s immediate release. The Supreme Court is set to hear this plea on October 14.
Wangchuk’s detention stems from significant protests advocating statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, aimed at protecting indigenous rights and interests.
Following his arrest, early reports indicated that Wangchuk was initially detained in Delhi and later transferred to Jodhpur Central Jail on September 26. His activism has drawn attention from various organizations advocating for human rights and environmental issues.
This case has raised plenty of public concern, particularly around the application of the NSA. Critics argue that such measures often suppress freedom of expression and dissent.
As Wangchuk’s legal team prepares for the Supreme Court hearing, many eyes will remain on the developments of this high-profile case, which intertwines environmental activism and fundamental civil liberties. Citizens and activists across India continue to rally for clarity and justice in this pressing matter.
