India Urges Global Action Against Terror Groups in Afghanistan

India is urging the global community to take decisive action against terrorist organizations and their facilitators operating in Afghanistan, particularly Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The appeal was made by India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, during a UN Security Council meeting focused on Afghanistan. The rising influence of these UN-designated terrorist entities poses significant risks not only to the region but to international peace and security.

What India’s Diplomatic Call Entails

Ambassador Harish emphasized the need for international coordination to ensure that these terrorist organizations cannot exploit Afghan territory for their operations. “The international community must coordinate efforts,” he stated, referencing the involvement of key actors such as ISIL and Al Qaeda.

“India is closely monitoring the security situation in Afghanistan,” he added. This monitoring comes as many nations are concerned about the potential resurgence of terrorism that can lead to destabilization.

Enhancing Bilateral Relations and Humanitarian Aid

Underlining the long-standing relationship between India and Afghanistan, Harish pointed out, “India has a paramount interest in ensuring peace and stability in the war-torn country.” This relationship is not merely political; it extends into humanitarian support and developmental aid.

Harish detailed how India has taken significant steps to assist Afghanistan, particularly in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that struck last month. India was one of the first nations to respond, providing humanitarian assistance that includes over 1,000 family tents and 15 tonnes of food supplies.

Statistics Highlight India’s Commitment

In addition to immediate earthquake relief, India has delivered around 50,000 tonnes of wheat, more than 330 tonnes of medicines, and essential social support items for those in need. According to the representative, this commitment highlights India’s dedication to meeting the developmental needs of the Afghan people.

Challenges and Future Directions

As Afghanistan continues to grapple with political upheavals and humanitarian crises, Harish stressed the importance of a multi-faceted approach. “Any coherent policy must incentivize positive behavior while disincentivizing harmful actions,” he noted, warning that focusing solely on punitive measures would not yield the desired outcomes.

This nuanced perspective calls for innovative strategies that could include international collaboration to foster Afghanistan’s recovery and development. The door for a fresh approach is open, as the previous strategies have not sufficiently addressed the realities faced by the Afghan populace.

A Call for Compassion

With millions suffering under poverty and disease, Harish urged the international community to respond with compassion rather than indifference. As Afghanistan’s people await support, India remains committed to not only humanitarian assistance but also capacity-building initiatives.

“India’s engagement with Afghanistan is ongoing and will continue to evolve based on the realities on the ground,” Harish stated, expressing New Delhi’s readiness to participate in joint efforts to provide lasting solutions.

Ultimately, India advocates for a coordinated international effort that actively addresses the threats posed by LeT and JeM while simultaneously supporting the urgent humanitarian needs of the Afghan people.
