Kohli and Rohit Target 2027 ODI World Cup Amid Gambhir’s Focus

India’s cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are determined to participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday emphasized that the duo must focus on the present rather than the distant future.

With Shubman Gill recently announced as India’s new ODI captain, selectors have initiated a transition phase in the team’s dynamics. Kohli and Rohit, who will be 39 and 40 years old respectively by 2027, face scrutiny regarding their long-term positions in the team.

“The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It is very important to stay in the present. Obviously, they are quality players. Their experience will be valuable in Australia. Hopefully, both can have a successful tour, and more importantly, as a team, we can have a successful series,” Gambhir stated in response to inquiries about the veterans’ future.

Gambhir’s comments come at a crucial time. The upcoming nine ODIs—three each against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand—will play a pivotal role in determining Kohli and Rohit’s future with the team. Sources suggest that selectors might base their final decision on performance during these matches.

In his first complete year as head coach, Gambhir has focused on building a robust selection process while identifying fresh talent. He explained the qualities he seeks in players ready to take the national field.

“First and foremost, you look at talent. Then the work ethic. You also assess the character in that dressing room—particularly in red-ball cricket. You must evaluate their hunger. If a player possesses these attributes, they can expect a successful Test career,” Gambhir elaborated.

Moreover, Gambhir emphasized the competitive nature of international cricket as an “insecure environment” where securing spots on the team becomes increasingly challenging.

“It’s important to give players a longer run. Only 15 can represent the country at one time, but many are waiting for their turn. So, if you pick the right characters, give them time to prove themselves rather than chopping and changing,” he advised.

On the emotional aspect of selection, Gambhir advocated for a compassionate approach. He expressed his aversion to the term “dropping players,” stating:

“You don’t drop players; you select players. When someone misses out, the least a coach can do is be empathetic, not ruthless.”

Reflecting on the team’s efforts during the England tour, Gambhir praised their discipline and commitment, concluding:

“The Test squad that went to England was superb in terms of discipline and hard work. For me, that was a huge tick.”
