NCW’s Mahila Jan Sunwai Program in Jammu for Women’s Justice

Jammu, 26th September 2025 — The National Commission for Women (NCW) organized a pivotal Mahila Jan Sunwai event today in Jammu, aimed at the on-the-spot redressal of women’s grievances. Chaired by Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar, the initiative sought to engage directly with complainants and provide swift resolutions.

Witnessing significant participation from affected women, the Commission successfully addressed multiple complaints in real-time, reinforcing its commitment to justice and support through accessible and responsive mechanisms. This effort aligns with the NCW’s broader mandate of safeguarding women’s rights across India.

Smt. Rahatkar emphasized the necessity of such initiatives, stating, “Our responsibility is to ensure that women feel safe and empowered to voice their issues.” She praised the cooperative stance of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, acknowledging their swift action in facilitating the event.

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Jammu appreciated the selection of Jammu as the venue for the outreach program. DIG Jammu commended the NCW for addressing crucial topics surrounding women’s safety and dignity, which remain pertinent in society today.

This sitting also culminated in a review meeting involving senior police and administrative officials. Here, the NCW provided guidelines aimed at improving existing frameworks for women’s safety. Further emphasis was placed on the necessity of organizing more seminars and educational programs focused on enhancing the security measures for women.

A PowerPoint presentation delivered during the meeting showcased safety measures and facilities available for women in Jammu, alongside critical data correlating to the prevention and detection of crimes against women. These statistics highlighted the importance of a proactive approach to support women’s rights and services.

The collaborative efforts of various departments, including the district administration and local police, illustrate a unified front against violence and discrimination faced by women. As highlighted by Sh. Shiv Kumar, IPS, Deputy Inspector General of Jammu-Samba-Kathua (JSK) Range, the involvement of local law enforcement boosts community trust and engagement in matters concerning women’s grievances.

The session brought together notable stakeholders including Sh. Rakesh Minhas, IAS DC Jammu, Sh. Joginder Singh, SSP Jammu, and a host of other officials dedicated to improving women’s safety and institutional responsiveness.

Such initiatives, including the Mahila Jan Sunwai program, play a vital role in not just addressing grievances, but also in building a framework for future safety measures. By establishing open channels of communication and support, the NCW hopes to foster an environment where women can live free from fear of violence and discrimination.

The NCW remains focused on strengthening institutional mechanisms to ensure that grievances are addressed effectively. This proactive approach aims not only at immediate resolutions but also at long-term improvements to the safety and dignity of women throughout the nation.
