Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for welfare schemes aimed at supporting construction workers in Jammu and Kashmir. This significant fund will directly benefit eligible workers through an online transfer mechanism.
Officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB) confirmed that all Assistant Labour Commissioners will facilitate the immediate transfer of funds to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
The announcement comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance worker welfare amidst the growing needs of the unorganised construction sector. The assistance will cover various flagship programs including:
- Education support
- Disability assistance
- Aid for chronic illness
- Support for next of kin of deceased workers
- Marriage assistance
- Meritorious awards for children of registered workers
In July’s 22nd meeting of the JKBOCWWB, Abdullah emphasized the importance of redefining ‘construction worker’ to include all vulnerable labourers. This initiative aims to ensure that no eligible worker is left out of essential welfare measures.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah stated. He reiterated the government’s commitment to exploring innovative policy mechanisms to enhance coverage and financial security for workers, aligning with national standards of labour welfare.
In a related development, CM Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over a tragic accident involving a bus load of Indian Umrah pilgrims in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The bus collided with a tanker, leading to the tragic demise of 45 pilgrims, with only one survivor sustaining severe injuries.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Abdullah remarked.
Initial reports indicate that the bus was transporting 46 devotees from Mecca to Medina when the mishap occurred early on Monday. The tragedy has left an indelible mark on the community, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures for pilgrims traveling abroad.
CM Abdullah’s dual focus on welfare for construction workers and empathy towards victims of the tragic accident highlights his commitment to both economic development and humanitarian values.
