Tariq Hameed Karra Calls for Judicial Probe into Leh Violence

Tariq Hameed Karra, President of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), on Thursday demanded an impartial judicial inquiry into the Leh violence of September 24. The tragic incident claimed the lives of four individuals, raising serious concerns regarding law and order in the region. He emphasized that the inquiry should be conducted by a sitting High Court judge, or alternatively, by a retired judge of integrity.

Karra addressed reporters, stating, “Whatever happened in Leh should not be repeated, but there must be an inquiry. If a sitting High Court judge is not available on fast track, then the probe should be entrusted to a credible retired judge.” His insistence on judicial scrutiny represents a broader call for accountability in governance and public safety.

Earlier in the day, Karra paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries. He praised their leadership, ideology, and commitment to a self-reliant India. While recalling their contributions, he highlighted that Gandhian philosophy continues to inspire the world and is recognized even at the United Nations.

As the Rajya Sabha elections approach, Karra remarked that seat-sharing agreements and potential alliances would be determined by the Congress leadership at the central level. He noted that senior leader Digvijay Singh has already been appointed as the observer for these elections, indicating a strategic approach for the party.

Additionally, addressing the situation surrounding Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, Karra advocated for his participation in the Assembly session. “Even Engineer Rashid was allowed to participate in Parliament while lodged in Tihar Jail. By the same analogy, Mehraj Malik should also be allowed,” he emphasized, raising concerns about the basic rights of legislators.

The demand for a judicial inquiry into the Leh violence showcases the pressing need for an effective legal framework to address conflicts in the region. Karra’s statements reflect an ongoing dialogue about governance, justice, and the role of the judiciary in ensuring peace and accountability in Jammu and Kashmir.
